issue Culture Laboratories
These laboratories cater for different tissue culture requirements:
Quarantine Room – for cells whose mycoplasma status is undetermined
Human Room – for manipulation of human blood, primary cells, or stem cells
Viral Room - for the genetic manipulation of mammalian cells with replication incompetent viruses.
Mycoplasma-Free Room – for cells which have been certified free of mycoplasma contamination
Adjacent to the Tissue Culture service area (materials may be transferred via an access hatch) is a Ruskinn Technologies SCI-tive hypoxic workstation . This hypoxic workstation has been modified to house a Zeiss Axiovert 25 inverted fluorescent microscope. This adaptation facilitates cell culture and imaging under low oxygen conditions.
Each of the four tissue culture areas houses both a CO2 incubator and a CO2 incubator with O2 control. The compressed gases (carbon dioxide and nitrogen) required to operate these are stored in an outside store. In the event that an accidental release of gas should occur, carbon dioxide and oxygen levels are monitored by an alarm system providing both audible and visual alarms in the event of either oxygen deficiency or carbon dioxide enrichment.
