Genomatica is a widely-recognized technology leader for the chemical industry. It delivers new manufacturing processes that enable its partners to produce the world’s most widely-used chemicals from renewable feedstocks, with better economics and greater sustainability than petroleum-based processes.
Genomatica’s first process, for BDO, is now commercial. Our GENO BDO™ process was used to make 5 million pounds of BDO in late 2012; and has been licensed by BASF, the world’s #1 producer, and by Novamont. Multiple companies, including Toray, have confirmed that BDO produced with our GENO BDO process is the ‘exact same’ chemical as petro-based BDO. This means that it can be used the exact same way to make downstream materials and products as petro-chemicals, simplifying and accelerating adoption. Additionally, Genomatica is developing processes for other chemicals; the next announced process is for butadiene, with Versalis and Braskem as partners.
We develop our processes using our proprietary biotechnology platform. Our processes are designed to convert a range of renewable feedstocks into numerous target chemicals that meet industry specifications for large, established markets. Our platform combines predictive computational modeling with advanced experimental laboratory technology and process engineering in a unique systems-based approach. This allows us to develop highly efficient manufacturing processes faster than traditional process development methods. Our development speed and process efficiency were validated by our achievement of successful commercial-scale production of BDO using our process in less than five years. Our intellectual property currently targets processes to produce over 20 intermediate and basic chemicals, including our commercial GENO BDO process and the process for butadiene that we are developing.
We work with industry leaders to accelerate broad and rapid commercial adoption of our processes. To date, we have announced partnerships with BASF, Mitsubishi Chemical, Novamont, DuPont Tate & Lyle, Tate & Lyle, Versalis, Braskem, M&G/Chemtex and Waste Management.
We have raised $125 million in financing from Alloy Ventures, Bright Capital, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Mitsubishi Chemical, Mohr Davidow Ventures, TPG Biotech, VantagePoint Capital Partners, Versalis and Waste Management.
Genomatica’s recognition includes the Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation award, ICIS Top 40 ‘Ones to Watch’, the Kirkpatrick Award, the EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, voted #1 Hottest three years in a row by Biofuels Digest, and being named a Best Place to Work by The Scientist two years in a row.
