The facility is set up as a multi-user laboratory open for all collaborators of the CSB. The spectrum of activities ranges from service work in routine microscopy applications, training and support to development of new methods and independent research projects.
The core equipment of the CSB microscopy facility are two Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopes (Zeiss LSM710 and Leica SP2) and a high resolution wide-field fluorescence microscope (Zeiss Axio Cell Observer Z1). We also have a conventional wide-field fluorescence microscopy workstation equipped with CCD camera and monochromator illumination for highly selective fluorophor excitation. The microscopes are equipped with incubation chambers for live imaging of cells and organisms. Our equipment enables users to perform time lapse and video microscopy as well as various other methods to identify molecular interactions and dynamics of protein distribution in cells (e.g. linear unmixing, FRET, FRAP). A microinjection workstation is also available.
Since march 2013, it is also possible to perform microscopic high content screening on a Hermes WiScan HTS system (IDEA-Biomedical).
