Relypsa, Inc. is a privately-held, clinical-stage pharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of nonabsorbed polymeric drugs to treat disorders in the areas of renal, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Enrollment of a pivotal Phase 3 trial of the company’s lead product candidate, patiromer, is complete, and upon FDA approval, Relypsa plans to commercialize the product as a treatment for hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia is a life-threatening condition defined as abnormally elevated levels of potassium in the blood. Patiromer is a non-absorbed, optimized potassium binding polymer administered as a convenient oral suspension powder that has been shown in clinical studies to be well tolerated as well as to lower, and maintain control of, serum potassium levels into the normal range in hyperkalemic subjects. Relypsa has global royalty-free commercialization rights to patiromer, and intellectual property protection in the U.S. until at least 2030.

Established in 2007, Relypsa was formed as a spin-out of Ilypsa, Inc., which was acquired by Amgen in 2007 for $420M. To date, Relypsa has raised a total of $193 million in three rounds of venture capital financing. Investors include OrbiMed, 5AM Ventures, Delphi Ventures, Mediphase Venture Partners, New Leaf Venture Partners, Sprout Group, Amgen and Sibling Capital.
