The Aptamer group brings together various aptamer technology driven companies to provide a range of services to the life sciences industry. Over the coming decades aptamer technology will have a profound effect on the life science market helping provide more cost-effective solutions to end users. We aim to address market needs through our group which has companies specialising in: the provision of high quality R&D consumables and high throughput aptamer screening services through Aptasol, biomarker discovery and validation tools (Aptasort), diagnostics devices / reagents (Aptadx) and therapeutic lead compounds (Aptarx).

Custom aptamer development (Aptasol)

Aptamer Solutions provides bespoke services to the life sciences sector including the development and manufacture of DNA and RNA aptamers as alternatives to antibodies. Aptamer Solutions was founded in March 2008 by Dr Arron Tolley and Dr David Bunka in order to address several key areas in the life sciences market that were unfilled by monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies. Our high-throughput aptamer selection processes, combined with a customised suite of high throughput liquid handling robotics, allows us to offer a fully automated, rapid and consistent approach to aptamer development. Aptamer Solutions offers the perfect solution for new projects or for the revisiting of past antibody projects that have failed or yielded unsatisfactory results.

Aptamer Integration / Diagnostics development (Aptadx)

Aptamer Diagnostic is a contract research organisation created to respond to the need for faster, more accurate and more diverse and diagnostic reagents with a longer shelf-life. We specialise in the development and modification of aptamers specifically for use in a wide range of different diagnostics / detection platforms. Aptamers are a natural investment for customers who wish to diversify their product portfolio, develop a new line of products, extend the shelf life of existing products, truly immortalise their product line, limit batch to batch variability with their reagents, reduce development and production costs and simplify their existing assays.

Aptamer Therapeutics (Aptarx)

Aptamer Therapeutics specialises in the development of nucleic acid aptamers as candidate molecules for therapeutic applications. The ability of aptamers to specifically target a protein, protein domain, cell or tissue type etc is not only of interest for diagnostic developments; they are now being developed for their potential uses in therapeutics There are several avenues for exploitation of aptamers as therapeutics.

Aptamers can be:

  • used directly as therapeutic agents
  • used to form part of a therapeutic chimera
  • used to serve as a carrier for other therapeutic agents or
  • used to modulate the activity of a therapeutic agent

Aptarx are currently developing aptamers for use as therapeutics with several partners.

Biomarker Discovery (Aptasort)

Aptasort have combined a biomarker enrichment process with our aptamer isolation protocols yielding a first-in-kind discovery process. Our proprietary aptamer based biomarker discovery platform and proprietary combinatorial libraries contain up to and over 1018 different molecules, this diversity and bespoke library design is fundamental to the success of the screening process. This technology enables us to greatly speed up the identification of novel biomarkers as well as diagnostics and/or therapeutic candidate molecules. This technology builds on one of the most powerful uses of aptamer technology, which is the ability for aptamers to be isolated against targets without any prior knowledge of the target. Aptasort is currently validating its biomarker discover platform with several collaborators and is keen to collaborate with the pharmaceutical industry during the testing phase of the technology.
