We have developed the ‘work-loop’ model as a pre-clinical myocardial assay assessing cardiac contractility in normal, diseased and ageing myocardium in order to determine the cardiovascular safety of lead pharmaceutical compounds.
InoCardia’s work-loop assay is the only relevant in-vitro human model of cardio-toxicity available worldwide. Both the pharmaceutical industry and regulators recognise that contractility assessment is currently fraught with problems.
Adverse drug effects on the CV system are a major cause of attrition in drug Discovery & Development and a major cause of drug withdrawals. Drug withdrawal can cost companies billions in lost revenue and legal fees.
Cardiac contractility (inotropy) is a contributing factor to the high incidence of CV-related attrition. Despite this, current techniques such as the Langendorff preparation have been in use since the 1890s – even though they only produce results sufficient to identify ‘Hazard compounds’ effectively.
New advances are needed to go beyond Hazard compounds and identify and manage ‘Risk compounds’ in line with today’s Research & Development demands. InoCardia is developing work-loop models to meet this need, enabling you to select Candidates with reduced cardiac contractility liability and potentially better Development and Market outcomes.
