Tianjin Weikai Bioeng Ltd. (Weikai) is an innovative high-tech enterprise, specializing in R&D in stem cell technology, product development related to advanced cell culture and providing CRO (Contract Research Organization) services in cell/stem cell based assays. The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) is chaired by Professor Zhanfeng Cui, Director of the Oxford Centre for Tissue Engineering and Bioprocessing, University of Oxford. Other distinguished SAB members include Prof Robert Cohen, St. Laurent Professor of Chemical Engineering, MIT, and Prof Ole Paulsen, the Chair of Physiology (1883) in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. Our key technical staffs were trained in the UK and have many years of work experience in the fields of biotechnology and stem cell research. Weikai also owns a number of core technologies with independent intellectual property rights.

Weikai was founded in 2009 with registered capital of 12 million RMB (USD 1.95M). Weikai mainly focuses on cell/stem cell technologies and their applications in regenerative medicine and drug discovery. Our core technologies include the separation, purification, and amplification of stem cells, three-dimensional stem cell culture and differentiation, functional assays, quality control, as well as preservation technology of cell and tissue banking. Weikai has developed several advanced in vitro models for drug efficacy and toxicity testing platforms including anti-cancer and diabetes drug testing, liver, neuronal and cardiomyocyte toxicities. The company has well equipped Class II laboratories of 1200 square meters, and cell culture rooms, and the equipment and instruments necessary for stem cell research, cell based assays and CRO services. The company implanted ISO9001 in Dec 2012 and certified by SGS.

Weikai has developed a wide range of collaborations with universities, research institutions and high-tech firms including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Oxford Engtech Limted (UK), Zyoxel Ltd (UK), Chang Gung University, Taiwan, and Tianjin International Joint Academy for Biotechnology and Medicine, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Process Engineering, and Dalian Medical University.

Zyoxel in the UK is our strategic partner. Zyoxel was spun off from Oxford University, and is engaged in new drug development and pre-clinical technology. The 3D perfusion cell culture platform, TissueFlex®, was first commercialized by Zyoxel and now manufactured by Weikai, under license from Zyoxel and University of Oxford. This device can greatly improve the reliability and clinical relevance of cell based assays, and is an effective tool in drug screening and toxicity testing. It is also an efficient tool to optimize stem cell culture and to develop cell expansion protocols.
